Woman ditches cheating hubby to travel world in van with her dog

When Emily Abrahams’ fella cheated on her she sold up and hit the road with her dog.

Emily, 34, went on the adventure of a lifetime after spotting racy texts on her husband’s phone.

They had been together four years but she decided to use their break up as a chance to chase her travel dreams.

After a year of planning, including organising a house sale, Emily and Border Collie Loki set off for Europe.

They moved into a camper van to tour almost 20 countries. Over two years, Emily and Loki went all over – from Norway to Italy.

They went to the top of Sweden to see the Northern Lights, did 4am mountain hikes in Slovenia for stunning sunrises, and Loki got frightened by thawing waterfalls crashing down in Austria.

Emily, a former primary school teacher, said: “I had grown suspicious of my then-husband so I decided to check his phone and found some rather racy messages. We’d only been married for four years – it was devastating.

“Looking back, I’m so grateful I got cheated on. I would have just stayed put being miserable otherwise. After the split I tried to think about what I really wanted to do with my life. I realised I wanted to see the world with my best friend – my dog, Loki. He’s the best travel buddy ever.”

Emily, originally from Melbourne, Australia, added: “I had to sell the house. I had to remotely buy and organise for the van to be renovated.”

First stop after the duo’s 4,000-mile flight from Melbourne was Karlsruhe, in Germany. Emily said: “I only really chose to park and sleep in natural, beautiful places, so we’d wake up and go for a walk in a stunning forest or by a huge lake.”

Loki, now seven, and Emily are now settled in the Pennines, and she is a pet photographer in Durham.

Emily said: “I suppose I am ready to settle down. But we shall see, the travel bug is hard to shake.”

Her ex said: “The context to this is that we had not been happy as a couple for about a year, had acknowledged it together, and had been to couples’ counselling a number of times. I am the first to admit, and do not hide the fact that I was messaging another woman.

“Yes there was an emotional connection beyond friendship, but it was not a physical relationship (from memory, I think we had perhaps kissed).

“I think it is clear that Emily’s relationship with Loki exceeded her level of commitment to me, and our relationship.”

He added that he sees the situation as a “relationship breakdown” as opposed to “cheating and infidelity”.
