UK’s scary nuclear defences as Putin brags Satan II almost able to hit Britain

Vladimir Putin once again upped the ante on the dangerous rhetoric he started by bragging Russia's terrifying new hypersonic nuclear missiles are just months away from being able to hit the UK.

Coming as tensions with NATO reach their highest point in years, Putin's new SARMAT missile, branded Satan-2 in the West, is thought to be one of the most powerful nuclear weapons at Russia's disposal.

In what could be a world first, it's said the weapon is able to avoid modern anti-missile systems while carrying a 7.5-tonne warhead.

And to make matters worse, the Kremlin's mouthpiece TV channels have even quipped about deploying the missiles and wiping the whole of the UK completely off the map.

Obviously confident with his new toy, Putin has taken to bragging of the killing power of his flagship missile during a meeting with young officers and military school graduates.

He said yesterday: "We will continue to develop and strengthen our armed forces, taking into account potential military threats and risks.

"Successful testing of the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile has been carried out.

"It is planned that the first such complex will be put on combat duty by the end of the year."

The fighting talk was amped up further by Russia’s defence committee deputy chairman, Aleksey Zhuravlyov, who suggested the deadly weapon could be used on the UK and US.

Speaking to state broadcaster TV Russia 1, he said: "If the United States threatens our state, it’s good: here is the Sarmat for you, and there will be nuclear ashes from you if you think that Russia should not exist. And Finland says that it is at one with the USA. Well, get in line.”

He also said the Kremlin would be able to hit Finland with a Sarmat from Siberia and could even reach the UK, The Independent reports.

However, as the conflict so far has proved, what Russia says it is capable of and what it actually is are two separate things entirely.

In the event that Putin is serious about attacking the UK though, it's comforting to know that it would be the last thing he ever did.

According to Arms Control Centre, the UK has an estimated 225 nuclear weapons, of which 120 are active and can be used.

At all times, the UK has four Vanguard-class SSBNs Nuclear Submarines patrolling the sea.

Each of these subs possesses eight Trident II SLBMs with an estimated range of 7,400 kilometres.

So in the event that Putin did decide to fire a Satan II in the direction of blighty, the UK would be able to fire off a weapon in response before Russia's missile landed.
