China’s number three in command will meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin during an economic forum on Wednesday. The meeting will be the most senior level in-person meeting between Moscow and Beijing since the start of Russia’s Ukraine invasion.
Li Zhanshu will meet with President Putin during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.
Russia’s relationship with China has continued despite the Ukraine invasion, which China has failed to condemn.
The two countries have emerged as close partners in the last two decades as both have tensions with the West.
Xi Jinping and Putin declared the two countries had a “no limit” partnership just weeks before Russia launched its bloody war on its neighbour.

Liz Truss pledges full backing to Ukraine
New Prime Minister Liz Truss has affirmed her committment to Ukraine in a call with President Zelensky.
A Downing Street statment said: “In her first call with a counterpart since becoming prime minister, she reiterated to the Ukrainian leader that he had her full backing, and Ukraine could depend on the UK’s assistance for the long term.
“The leaders discussed the need to strengthen global security and the measures necessary to cut off the funds fuelling Putin’s war machine.
“The leaders deplored Putin’s attempts to weaponise energy, and the prime minister said it was vital Russia’s blackmail did not deter the west from ensuring Putin fails.
“She also underscored the importance of ensuring the UK and our allies continue to build energy independence.”
