A 51-year-old driver was killed Friday night on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora.
Aurora police say the unidentified man was driving a MINI Cooper eastbound “at a high rate of speed” and ran a red light at Colfax and Tower Road around 10 p.m.
Soon after, he collided with a Honda Civic that had stopped on the eastbound shoulder of Colfax and was trying to make a U-turn into the westbound lanes. The crash occurred just east of Himalaya Street, according to police.
“While making the U-turn, the Honda Civic was broadsided by the MINI Cooper,” Aurora Police Department spokeswoman Crystal McCoy explained Saturday. “Investigators have not yet been able to determine to what degree, if any at all, that speed, alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.”
The driver of the Cooper was taken to a hospital and later died there. The 32-year-old female driver of the Civic was extricated from that vehicle and taken to a hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to police.
