The leader of a hit squad linked to El Chapo’s cartel has been gunned down and his body dumped on a street, foreign media reports.
Edgar Alexis Meza Soto, known as “PIWI”, was found dead around 6.40am local time yesterday morning in the city of Guaymas, northern Mexico.
Soto led Los Salazar, a group of assassins who worked for Chapo’s Sinaloa Cartel, Infobae reports.
He was wounded at a recent clash in Puerto de Guaymas, before his corpse was left in the Loma Dorada neighborhood by fellow hitmen.
Officials found Soto riddled with bullets after he was thrown from a moving vehicle.
Soto had been tied to another shooting in the northern section of the city.
Los Salazar hail from the municipality of Chínipas, Chihuahua, and first came to prominence in 2005 as cartel violence escalated.
They reportedly trafficked drugs and migrants to the US for the Sinaloa Cartel.
It was led by Adán Salazar Zamorano, alias Don Adán, until his arrest in 2011.
Earlier this month, another alleged drugs kingpin of the Sinaloa Cartel was detained in an army crackdown.
