The former Alaska Governor urged the public to slow the spread of the virus by wearing face masks.

Speaking to People magazine she described her “bizarre” symptoms and said a number of her family members also caught the virus.

Mrs Palin said she lost her senses of taste and smell making it “unmistakable COVID caught me”.

She continued: “That day I finally tested positive – like millions of other Americans.”

Coronavirus has killed more than 550,000 Americans, more than in any other country.

Former President Donald Trump was sharply criticised for allowing the virus to run riot across the country whilst opposing lockdowns.

However the US has an effective vaccination programme with 30 percent of the population having received at least one dose whilst 16 percent are fully vaccinated.

Ms Palin explained her ordeal began when “one of my daughters awoke to having lost her sense of taste and small [and]immediately had a positive COVID test”.

She continued: “I then observed symptoms in my son Trig, who curiously is the most enthusiastic mask-wearer, and after our numerous negative tests over the year he tested positive.

“Children with special needs are vulnerable to COVID ramifications so with a high fever he was prescribed azithromycin, which really seemed to help, and I increased amounts of vitamins I put in his puréed food.”

Trig, who was born in 2008, has Downs Syndrome.
