Queen ‘still a very canny operator good at the charm offensive’, claims expert

The Queen is still savvy and firmly in charge of the Royal Family despite her advancing years, according to a royal expert.

Her Majesty, who turned 96 earlier this year, has made fewer public appearances in the past few months due to a number of health scares — but she remains a 'canny operator' who is 'good at the charm offensive', says Daniela Elser.

The comments follow new photos released from the Queen's annual trip up to Scotland this week, where she was joined by members of her family for a week of events north of the border.

Her youngest son, Edward, and his wife, Sophie, known as the Earl and Countess of Forfar whilst in Scotland, accompanied her yesterday (June 28) for an event at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The visit to her official residence is the monarch's first public engagement since her Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier this month — with Daniela Elser being one of many to notice how sharp she seemed.

Writing in her column for News.com.au, she said "That’s the thing about Her Majesty: She is not only good at the charm offensive part of ruling but she is a very canny operator who has learned how to win friends in the international community and influence people.

Her journey north of the border comes at a politically sensitive time for the home nation, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon recently announcing her intention to hold another referendum on Scotland leaving the United Kingdom in the next few years.

But Daniela observed that the Queen is no stranger to these types of delicate situations, commenting: "What is so cheering to see is that even at her very advanced age, despite suffering from “episodic mobility problems” and having no shortage of headache-inducing, scandal-prone family members to suck up her time and energy, she is still a dab hand at statecraft."
