Boris Johnson has laid out the next series of coronavirus restrictions in Parliament, warning the UK is at a "perilous tipping point".

The Prime Minister increased fines for first-time mask offenders and those who ignore isolation guidelines.

The UK’s Covid-19 alert level has moved up from three to four, meaning transmission is “high or rising exponentially”.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the move reflects “the current threat posed by coronavirus".

He added: “This country now faces a tipping point in its response and it is vital everybody plays their part now to stop the spread of the virus and protect lives.”

On Monday, September 21, a further 4,368 daily cases were reported in the UK, up from 3,899.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce tougher measures on face masks, which will reportedly become compulsory for staff in pubs, restaurants and shops, along with taxis and private hire vehicles.

A 10pm curfew on pubs, bars and restaurants is expected to be implemented from Thursday night.

More than 175 pub chiefs signed an open letter to the PM predicting that a curfew – or stronger measures such as a second national lockdown – would be disastrous.

Johnson will also address the country later in a press conference at 8pm.
