As of 10pm, the warnings concern several rivers where levels are expected to remain high overnight. Properties located near these watering places in Blackburn, Blackpool, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Yorkshire could be in immediate danger from Thursday night until Friday morning.

There is a risk of homes and businesses being submerged in water overnight with low visibility for emergency services should they have to intervene.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Further persistent rain, heavy at times, is likely until the early hours of Friday morning.

“20 to 30 mm rain is likely to accumulate, and with the ground already saturated, some flooding is possible in places. The rain will clear eastwards early on Friday morning.”

More than 59 regular flood alerts had been issued earlier this week but didn’t represent any immediate danger.

The Met Office advised avoiding using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.

No one should attempt to walk or drive through floodwater.

The level 2 flood warnings are set to expire on Friday morning at noon if not earlier.

The Greater Manchester Police has urged drivers to take more care in the rain after five crashes on nearby motorways today.

North West Motorway Police says all five crashes had been caused by aquaplaning.

Regarding the Manchester area, the Met Office stated: “River levels are rising on the River Irwell as a result of persistent rainfall.

“Consequently, flooding of low lying land, roads and farmland is possible today.

“We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads around the Rivers Beal, Roch and Croal, Limy Water and their tributaries.
