Meghan Markle struggled with weight and body image during ‘brutal’ teens and 20s

Prince Harry’s recent revelations on his mental health have sent shockwaves through the palace and made headlines around the world as it's rare for a member of the Royal Family to speak so candidly.

But his wife Meghan Markle has never been shy to speak about the issues in the past, and several years ago posted on her blog about having struggled with weight and body image in her “brutal” 20s.

When she wrote the post on her popular website The Tig, Meghan was chasing her acting career and hadn’t yet met her royal husband-to-be.

Commemorating her 33rd birthday, she wrote: "My 20s were brutal – a constant battle with myself, judging my weight, my style, my desire to be as cool/as hip/as smart/as 'whatever' as everyone else."

Harry’s mum Princess Diana also had problems with her body image.

The late princess battled bulimia and in a now-infamous interview with Martin Bashir for the BBC she said: “You inflict it upon yourself because your self-esteem is at a low ebb.

“You fill your stomach up four or five times a day and it gives you a feeling of comfort.

“Then you're disgusted at the bloatedness of your stomach, and then you bring it all up again.”

Meghan went on to write in her blog how her teenage years were even tougher than her 20s.

“My teens were even worse – grappling with how to fit in, and what that even meant," she wrote.

“"My high school had cliques: the black girls and white girls, the Filipino and the Latina girls.

"Being biracial, I fell somewhere in between.

"So everyday during lunch, I busied myself with meetings – French club, student body, whatever one could possibly do between noon and 1pm- I was there.

"Not so that I was more involved, but so that I wouldn’t have to eat alone."

But the actress said she learnt to be herself from speaking to a casting director.

She revealed: "I must have been about 24 when a casting director looked at me during an audition and said 'You need to know that you’re enough. Less makeup, more Meghan.'

"You need to know that you’re enough.

"A mantra that has now engrained itself so deeply within me that not a day goes by without hearing it chime in my head."

Currently, the Duke and Duchess live with their son Archie at their home in California – and another baby is on the way, expected to arrive in the summer.
