A military plane has crashed into an apartment building in Russia, with the pilots ejecting seconds before impact caused a huge fireball.

The incident happened on early Monday evening, October 17, but details of potential casualties have not been released yet.

The aircraft, an Su-34 on a training flight, crashed into the block of flats in Yeysk, just across the Sea of Azov from Ukraine.

HTB in Russia reported that the plane was on a training exercise, citing local media, who said that it went down in the courtyard of a house before fire spread to the apartment block.

They followed up with a tweet saying that emergency services in Yeysk, a port city, said it was an Su-34, a Soviet-made twin-seat craft that had two people on board, who managed to eject.

The Ministry of Defense latter confirmed the plane type, saying the Su-34 crashed while climbing to perform a training flight from the military airfield of the Southern Military District.

They said one pilot said that the reason for the accident was "the ignition of one of the engines during takeoff."

According to Google Translate, The Ministry of Emergency Situations said the fire area is 2,000 square meters, perhaps meaning the cordoned area is 2,000 square metres.

Pictures coming from the scene show a huge fireball engulfing the building. Footage shows huge black plumes of smoke rising into the night sky.

An open parachute, presumably a pilot, is also visible.

“Ambulances and firefighters are coming from all over the city, helicopters are in the area,” a resident told the state-run TASS news agency.
