Police have reportedly arrested Robert E Crimo III, the suspected shooter behind the July 4 massacre that has left six people dead.

The 22-year-old suspect reportedly opened fire from a rooftop at the parade in the suburb of Highland Park in Chicago just after 10am on Monday morning.

According to NBC Chicago Reporter, Mary Ann Ahern, Robert was arrested and taken into custody at around 12:30am (UK time).

She tweeted: "Highland Park suspect Robert Crimo apprehended in North Chicago after pursuit."

It comes after authorities earlier surrounded Robert's family home as they searched for him in a massive manhunt.

Highland Park Police said a rifle was recovered from the scene where at least 25 people were shot, ranging in age from eight to 85, doctors said.

The shooting in Highland Park, about 25 miles north of Chicago, began shortly after 10am as parade-goers enjoyed a Fourth of July parade along Central Avenue.

Authorities said the gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop using a high-powered rifle.

Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jogmen said Robert was taken into custody without incident and charges were pending as police continue to investigate.

A total of 26 patients were received at Highland Park Hospital, according to Dr. Brigham Temple, the medical director of the NorthShore University Health System.
