Capitol: Raskin claims some protestors planned to ‘hang’ Pence
The CNN presenter was stunned after Senator Raskin said the rioters could be heard chanting “hang Pence” while marching through the Capitol building in Washington on January 6. The Democratic Senator, who was forced to shelter in his office with his daughter and son-in-law, was put in charge of tabling the articles that led to President Donald Trump’s second impeachment. Mr Raskin claimed an “assassination party” had been looking to murder both the Vice President and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Speaking to the CNN State of the Union host, Sen Raskin said: “Five Americans are dead because a violent mob was encouraged, exhorted and incited by the President of the United States.
“They broke into the Congress of the United States, into the Capitol and came within a hair’s breadth of hanging Vice President Mike Pence. The words are still ringing in the ears of the members, ‘hang Mike Pence, hang Mike Pence.’
“They built gallows outside the Capitol of the United States. There was an assassination party hunting for Nancy Pelosi so this cannot be at the level of normal, partisan push-and-pull. This was an attack on our country.”
Mr Tapper struggled for a comeback but admitted he “agrees” with Sen Raskin before questioning him on the next steps of the impeachment process against President Trump.

Sen Raskin insisted his party did not want to “establish a precedent” of ousting an outgoing President days before his departure from the White House but insisted Mr Trump would need to face the consequences of his actions.
He continued: “I don’t think anybody would seriously argue that we should establish a precedent where every president on the way out the door has two weeks or three weeks or four weeks to try to incite an armed insurrection against the union or organize a coup against the union.
“And if it succeeds, he becomes a dictator, and if it fails, he’s not subject to impeachment or conviction because we just want to let bygones be bygones.
“We’re putting together a trial plan, which is designed to get the truth of all of these events out. Obviously, we’re not going to be able to tell everyone’s story, but we are going to be able to tell the story of this attack on America and all of the events that led up to it.”

President Trump was impeached in the House of Representatives one week before the end of his administration on the count of inciting an insurrection.
The Senate is also expected to cast a vote on the impeachment papers following a trial but with the house not sitting until January 19, it remains unclear when the proceedings will take place.
Despite Mr Trump’s action having been widely condemned, additional violence and protests are expected to take place upon the inauguration of Joe Biden on Wednesday.
Republican Senator Lindsay Graham erupted at the incoming majority leader Chuck Schumer for seeking “vengeance” by pushing for the impeachment proceedings.

In a scathing statement on Sunday, Sen Graham said: “In your first act as Majority Leader, rather than begin the national healing that the country so desperately yearns for, you seek vengeance and political retaliation instead.
“While the Vice President and Senate Republicans rejected unconstitutional actions, you seek to force upon the Senate, what would itself be but one more unconstitutional action in this disgraceful saga – the impeachment trial of a former president”.
The letter has come after the latest poll from the Pew Research Center had shown Donald Trump’s approval rating had plummeted.
