Brit survey finds country’s best guard dogs – and the answer may surprise you

French Bulldogs have proved barks really are worse than bites – by being named Britain’s top guard dogs.

The pint-sized pooches possess the perfect `woof’ to scare off burglars, according to security experts.

Though they would barely reach knee-height to the average intruder the racket they make when strangers call makes them a top deterrent.

They are better at protecting property than a host of bigger and stronger breeds – including German Shepherds, Dobermans and Rottweilers, according to security retailer safe.co.uk.

Top vet Emma Bradley said: “French Bulldogs have a gruff bark that has lots of depth.

“It’s loud, sharp and deep which make for an ideal alert.

“They are very territorial and aren’t afraid to stand their ground either.’’

According to a survey 72% of householders do not have a guard dog.

But a spokesman for safe.co.uk said all home owners should consider buying one to protect their property – and said size did not matter when it came to scaring off burglars.

One dog owner told researchers: “Everyone’s house in the area has been burgled except ours.

“The difference is we have a Dachshund and a `Beware Of The Dog ’ sign on the fence.’’

Foot-high Jack Russell Terriers are also good deterrents.

Emma said: “A yappy and fearless dog, Jack Russell’s have no problems making themselves known.

“They are very instinctive and aren’t afraid of what they’re up against.

“They are also very loving and small which would suit a smaller family home looking to up its security.

“Their bark is dramatic and powerful and can instantly alert a human.’’

The safe.co.uk spokesman added: “They are a small but mighty creature with lots of authority.’’

The company’s managing director Anthony Neary said: “Having a dog is useful for two reasons.
