A Labour source told Sky News Political Correspondent Tamara Cohen that “there won’t be a by-election”.

According to Ms Cohen, the party pointed out that “by-elections are rare under these circumstances.

“It was a trend started when Douglas Carswell and Mark Reckless defected to Ukip from Tories in 2014.”

Christian Wakeford defected to the Labour party in light of the escalating “Partygate” scandal.
