John Barnes appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live to promote his new book The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism and spoke with host Nihal Arthanayake about racism in society. Mr Barnes argued capitalism was innately an oppressive system that would seek to have divisions in society based on either class, race, or sex and therefore called for capitalism to be abolished to fix racism. However, Mr Arthanayake, like many listeners, was confused at Mr Barnes’ rant and pointed out his assessment and book was full of “generalities” that provided no “solution” as he called the former footballer’s opinions “not helpful”.
