The shocking murder of Conservative MP Sir David Amess at a constituency surgery in Southend, Essex is likely to heighten MPs’ worries for their safety according to LBC Presenter Iain Dale. The 69-year-old MP was attacked at Belfairs Methodist Church by a knifeman and later died at the scene. The brutal killing marks the third attack on an MP in 10 years and brings back memories of the horrific killing of Labour MP Jo Cox.

LBC presenter Iain Dale said: “I think a lot of them are genuinely anxious about what could happen.

“This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened to an MP if you remember Nigel Jones the Liberal Democrat MP representative for Cheltenham back in the 1990s, he was stabbed by someone with a samurai sword and very serious injuries occurred.

He added: “Look it doesn’t happen very often but this would have brought back memories of what happened to Jo Cox as well I mean not a stabbing but a shooting.

“Look I used to work for an MP in the 1980s and all sorts of people got to constituency surgeries and often there are people with clear mental health problems that turn up

JUST IN: Sir David Amess has died

“No MP wants to sit behind a glass screen it just defeats the whole object of the thing but they know they are taking risks.

“The House of Commons now they do advise MPs on security but if you are one of the few MPs who say okay I am going to have to sit behind a glass screen you are going to get pilloried in your constituency for it.

“Even with incidents like this I think a lot of people still won’t have an understanding, it would just put a barrier between you and your constituents.

“So I don’t think many people would want to do that.”
