Andrea Coscelli, who led the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) since 2016, is due to step down from his position in July. His departure is seen as an opportunity to appoint a new chief executive to one of the UK’s most important economic regulators. Government insiders claimed ministers regarded Mr Coscelli as an impediment to post-Brexit economic reforms.

They also saw him as a hurdle to breaking with EU competition policy, The Telegraph reported.

During his time at the CMA, he oversaw a number of high-profile aborted and successful mergers of major British companies.

Mr Coscelli said: “By July I will have served for almost nine years as an executive director at the CMA, including six as chief executive.

“I feel now is the right time to confirm I will not be seeking another term.

“There is still a huge amount of work to do over the next six months and my focus will be on delivering the organisation’s objectives and enabling a smooth transition.”

Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, said he was grateful for Mr Coscelli’s leadership, adding: “We will continue to work closely with the CMA to promote competition for the benefit of consumers and enable businesses to make the most of the many opportunities on the horizon.”

“They are wrong. Her direction of travel is already known.”
